Laptop Computers and Crime Prevention
Theft is the most common crime on campus. Most items are stolen from vehicles
and unlocked or unattended rooms. Theft is the most difficult crime for MUPD to prevent, but the easiest crime
for you to prevent. Lock your doors whenever you are out of your room. If
this has not been your habit in the past, it is one you should adopt. Over
ninety percent of all thefts from campus buildings last year involved unlocked
rooms. A room that is unlocked for even a few minutes is all
the invitation a thief needs.
A thief needs only seconds to steal what it takes you
hours to earn. Going to lunch, or taking a break? Don't leave
a classroom or study area without your laptop. Take it with you, or you
run the risk that it won't be there when you return.
Apply distinctive paint markings to make your laptop
unique and easily identifiable. Also engravers and branders are
available through the University Police Department to allow you to put a
descriptive marking on your equipment.
