At approximately 3:39 p.m., Thursday,
August 18, the University of Missouri-Columbia Police Department
received a report of a bicyclist that was struck at the intersection
of South College Avenue (MO 763) and Rollins Street. Officers were
dispatched to the intersection where a Mazda Miata had struck a
bicyclist crossing northbound lanes of South College Avenue.
The Miata was in the center northbound
lane of South College Avenue when it struck the bicyclist that was
eastbound on the south side of Rollins Street. As the Miata struck
the bicyclist it caused her to go into the eastern most north bound
lane of South College Avenue where she was struck by a second
vehicle, a City of Columbia utility truck. The female was pinned
under the utility truck where fire personnel removed her. The female
was then transported by medical personnel to University of Missouri
Hospitals for treatment. (See Battalion Chief Steven Sapp’s
media release for further details)
The female bicyclist’s name is
not being released at this time pending notification of family. The
female is a University of Missouri-Columbia student.
The driver of the Mazda Miata is
identified as Judy Pope and the driver of the utility truck has been
identified as Michael Arens. Both drivers requested no media
contact.
Statements indicate that the bicyclist
was crossing South College Avenue against a steady red light.
