Statement on Steer:

At approximately 8:26 a.m., Tuesday, June 19th, the University Police Department received a phone call about a steer that had got loose from the Veterinary School area.  The steer was located in University Parking Lot CG1 where officers worked with Veterinary School staff and the owner to try and contain the steer. 

The steer went around staff and officers then proceeded north through campus where it later turned east toward the east campus area.  Officers followed the steer into the east campus area where they lost sight of it.  A short time later the steer was located heading back toward campus where officers, Veterinary School staff, and people with the owner tried to contain the steer.  A tranquilizer gun was used to try and stop the steer but the dart was unsuccessful. 

The steer then ran over an individual and headed north toward downtown before turning east toward the east campus area again.  Officers were able to stop the steer before it hurt any other individuals by shooting it behind a residence on Anthony Street around 9:49 a.m.

Veterinary School Staff were able to remove the steer from the back of the residence by loading it in a trailer. 

The injured individual was transported to the University Hospital and his status is unknown at this time.  His name is not being released at this time until appropriate contacts can be made.
